Female nudity is considered to be more objectionable than male nudity, while adult nudity is considered to be more objectionable than child nudity. An adult woman is prohibited by law from exposing her breasts, buttocks and genitalia – even in films. Wearing of bikini is perfectly legal, but due to social disapproval bikini-clad women are rarely seen. The only women who shed most or all of their clothes are models and actors, that too in protected environment only. The average Indian woman has to keep herself fully clothed whenever she makes a public appearance. No relaxation in her clothing is tolerated even at home. Compared to this, the average Indian man is allowed to strip to his underwear, but not more than that, when he is bathing in public. Rear nudity of men is also accepted under certain circumstances. Though the exposure of male genitalia can be a source of shock to many, men urinating in public places is a common sight. During summer a man is expected to spend a long time barechested, usually at and around home, but if he belongs to the poorer classes then almost everywhere. This is men’s defence mechanism against the insufferable heat of the Indian summer, though they conveniently overlook how women are denied the same relief. About child nudity the norms vary from the city to the countryside and also according to economic condition. If the child belongs to an urban upper or middle class family, he or she can be nude only within home. On the other hand, a child born of a lower class family or a family residing in the rural areas is free to wander in the nude. The gender of the child plays an important role here. The approximate maximum age for a girl to be seen nude is five years, while for a boy it is fourteen. The Indian villages regularly offer the sight of completely naked boys enjoying themselves (by swimming or playing football, for example) in public places.
