About the RideEdit

After its debut at Seattle's Pride March (source: WayBackMachine) on June 26th, 2005, the Body Pride Ride (BPR = "beeper") had clearly raised the bar concerning public nudity at this event. The crowds clearly celebrated our joy of life as they applauded and shared their joy and love with us!

(the text below may be placed into a new section "It this legal?" or something like that)

Many women ask individual "beepers" how "beepers" could be naked, but they could not. Event organizers stated "nudity or obscenity" was not permited[1] and that women's nipples must be covered. Simply put, we have been told that being naked is obscene and lewd. It simply isn't true. The intention of the law is to define unlawful behavior for the good of society, and it does a great job at that task. Thank you effective law makers.

"While many may object to public nudity, under Washington State's 'Indecent Exposure' statutes, it is not a crime." - Ken Bounds, Superintendent, Parks and Recreation, City of Seattle, July 2006

The difference between non-sexual public nudity and obscene/lewd behavior may seem subtle, but it is simple too.

For example, consider flashing from a kilt or skirt, or lifting a t-shirt to expose breasts. Flashing or streaking is intended to shock/alarm/insult the unsuspecting observer, and so might be considered Indecent Exposure. Simply being nude (biking, sunbathing, etc...) is not obscene/lewd, and so wisely and intentionally nudity is not the sole criteria for defining Indecent Exposure. There are many factors, including intention, specific actions, and most important formal citizen complaints taken by a police officer. In fact, a clothed person could be found guilty of indecent exposure based solely on their actions.

Citizens who call 911 to only report "I see a naked person" are wasting precious City funds as much as reporting an offensive polka-dot outfit being worn by someone at Pike Place market. Our 911 operators are professionally trained to determine real emergencies, and to assist citizens by responding with questions like, "What is the naked person doing?" --- walking, biking, getting painted, having fun, cycling 2-by-2 in a group? --- these are not unlawful actions, in Seattle.

Latest Information for 2012 Edit

Thank You 2011 Beepers!BodyPride 21:20, November 18, 2011 (PST)

Join the Yahoo! group (preview) to participate in the next event.

  • Date: Sunday, June 24th, 2012
  • Body Painting setup starts 8:00am (Early Bird Volunteers Needed)
  • Absolutely NO photographers permitted at the private painting party.
  • Painting from 8:15am until 10:15am (idle hands please help paint)
  • Ride Starts in Capitol Hill @ 10:30am SHARP! (tentative)
  • Route (almost mirrors 2008 ride) 5.5 miles including parade route
  • Parade Staging: somewhere on 4th Ave, arrive downtown by 11:30am (tentative)
  • Parade Starts @ 11:00am with Dykes on Bikes and 40+ special contingents
    • It is very important for us to stay at least 20 feet away from the group following us, or our group will becomes very stretched out. Stay close to front. Loop often, keep it organic and interesting.
    • We are well known for our photo-op pose, called "Park N Ride". Listen for the three whistle signal. We quickly form a tight angle-parked formation down the center of the roadway. We don't hold the "pose" very long at all, perhaps a five count after the last person joins the formation (single whistle blow), then we scatter quickly, perhaps directly into another Park-N-Ride facing the other direction.
  • Splash and Play in the International Fountain at Seattle Center after 3:30pm
  • Ends with Celebration & Dance at PrideFest

Historical TimelineEdit

2011 Sunday June 26th : 7th Annual Body Pride Ride : Painting was from 7:30am until 9:30am, then clean up, and ride started at 10am, left Volunteer Park around 10:25am(?), left Cal Anderson around 10:45am(?), arrived DT at 11am. We were Contingent #1 (C1), still 46th in parade line up, and staged/waited 30-45 minutes. We had 23 in our group. The spectators were very welcoming, and our group was able to shrink and expand as our space on the parade route varied along the way. We finished the parade route in record time and found a shaded grassy knoll to park our bikes and enjoy viewing the rest of the parade. Afterwards, we relocated into Seattle Center for PrideFest, played in the International Fountain around 3:30pm. Most of us remained naked all day long. Many beepers ran out of our promo cards (started with 500) this year.

2010 Sunday June 27 : 6th BPR body painting setup at 8am, painting until 10:25am. Franzie (surprize!!) arrived with snacks just after 10am. 15 painted up, one remained au naturale, one arrived painted, two more joined us painted in staging area, 19 participating in all. Capitol Hill tour and parade route (entry #122, originally #123) was the usual 5.5 miles route. BPR ended with the celebration of splash and dance, food and drink with thousands of our friends at PrideFest at Seattle Center and the International Fountain. In speaking with SPD officers on patrol at Seattle Center, and West Precinct Desk Officer, they reported only "inquiries", and no complaints. Seattle Center Events Manager on duty was contaced and also reported no complaints. (twitter hashtag #BPR6)

2009 Sunday June 28 : 5th Body Pride Ride was again welcomed by SO&P to participate in the Seattle Pride Parade (entry #69). Please refer to the yahoo group for latest info and how to get involved, spread the word, and to participate in this 5th BPR!!

2008 Sunday June 29 : 4th Body Pride Ride is officially welcomed and recognized as an entry in the PRIDE PARADE downtown. Entry #81. Early Sunday, we'll gather with decorated bikes at a private photo-free zone, paint up, then ride to downtown to our staging area. We are welcome naked by the parade organizers. Do not be lewd/obscene or you may be arrested.

In welcoming BPR to the Pride Parade, Eric Albert-Gauthier, SO&P President, wrote "I have approved your application, with no stipulations. The more people you have as part of your Body Pride Ride, the better! All we ask is that no lewd behavior is displayed." (2008-06-08)

2007 June 23 & 24 : Two rides are planned for this third year. A Saturday early morning tour of Capitol Hill ending with participation in the "Raise Your Voice March" on Capitol Hill, and a Sunday morning tour including downtown, and exploring the route of the pride parade downtown. Proposed route segments/maps are posted on yahoo group "links" section.

2006 June 24 & 25 : In this encore year, two rides were possible (Sat & Sun), and Saturday's effort came to fruition. Participants gathered on private property to get as naked as folks wished to be, and to be painted as much as folks wished to be. The group rode around this fine city of Seattle for about 90 minutes. After we completed the tour, in the Capitol Hill area, a group of riders were welcomed to ride within your "Raise Your Voice March", raising their voices for Body Pride and the power of cycling.

2005 After BPR cycled our way along the parade route for two plus hours, officially as entry #186, we ended our first BRP at Prospect and Broadway, where many police officers and vehicles were staged. We put on some clothing and most ventured into Volunteer Park to enjoy the Festival. There were *no* complaints and no arrests. The ride was a great success!

FYI, the intention is to focus on this wiki as our main resource for BPR information.
