Jaybird Run or simply Jaybird (http://JaybirdRun.org) is an unofficial free-spirited and creatively adorned ensemble of runners and walkers in the Seafair Torchlight Run. The Torchlight Run in Seattle has had a fair amount of creativity and costumed participants during the run, but we think its time to raise the level of artistic expression up a notch — there is plenty of opportunity for improvement! We would also like to generally see an increase in the popularity and participation in this safe, fun, community event. This will be a great way to mark the 30th Anniversary of The Torchlight Run! Please join us on Saturday, July 29th, 2006!

World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) Seattle, Hemp Ride and Jaybird Run are productions of The Organic Living Party (OLP) and The Work Less Party USA. Participatory arts, community involvement and play are not luxuries! OLP is, in part, a revival of the German Lebensreform movement.

[edit] Next event

See 29 July 2006 event for info about the last event.

The Second Annual Jaybird Run is being scheduled for the 2007 Torchlight Run at Seafair. Get involved!

  • Date: Saturday, July 28th, 2007?
  • Registration: There are three steps:
    • (1) All participants must register officially through Seafair. See the Torchlight Run official website for details.
    • (2) Sign up for the Jaybird Run specifically by filling out the form on the Jaybird Run website (http://JaybirdRun.org) and selecting "Jaybird" or "all events" from the pulldown menu. Add any additional comments or questions and hit "send".
    • (3) Pick up your registration packet with number and t-shirt on the day of the race.
Note: Participating and running as a "bandit" (not registered) is not only poor etiquette, its illegal to participate not paying the entry fee and signing the event's waiver. You can legally be ejected from the course.
  • Donations/Community support: We strongly urge you to make a donation or submit an endorsement for the Jaybird Run to the Organic Living Party/Work Less Party USA. Contact us about making a contribution!
  • Distance: 8K (4.97 miles) and 5K Run/Walk (3.1) USATF-Certified.
  • Location: Start and Finish areas located near Qwest Field on Occidental Avenue in the Downtown neighborhood of Seattle. Refer to the course.
  • Time: To be determined. 6:30 p.m.-8K, 6:40 p.m.-5K. Many of us will probably particpate in the 5K for the first year. That's equivalent to going just .3 miles over the distance around Green Lake.
  • Bodypainting party: We now have a location for our bodypainting party in the Capital Hill neighborhood. Please join our Jaybird Yahoo! group for discussions about the bodypainting party and other info.
Important: After getting painted or costumed, you must have some way to get yourself down to the Torchlight Run Registration Packet pickup area and race starting point.
Important: At this point we DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH PAINTERS FOR EVERYBODY. Please bring a friend to help paint you or wear a costume or something creative!
  • Costume contest: There is a costume contest, only participants who are participating within the theme of pirates are encouraged to participate.

[edit] Dress Code

The focus is on creativity, free-spiritedness and self-expression. Participants are encourage to go costumed, scantily-clad, clothes-free, topfree, body painted, face-painted or otherwise creatively adorned. Wear as much or as little as you want. For those going bare, remember nude is not rude! Seafair is a family-friendly event and inappropriate behavior will land you in a heap of trouble and may tarnish the experience for others. Those who chose to go bare, even if painted, may be stopped by event officials or police and possibly even arrested. However, public nudity that is not obsene is legal in Seattle.

"While public nudity is objectionable to many citizens, under Washington state’s Indecent Exposure Law, public nudity in itself is not illegal. The law specifies that “A person is guilty of indecent exposure if he or she intentionally makes any open and obscene exposure of his or her person or the person of another knowing that such conduct is likely to cause reasonable affront or alarm.” Kenneth R. Bounds, Superintendent, Seattle Parks and Recreation, on behalf of Mayor Greg Nickels, 12 July 2006. More info at Seattle history.

We highly recommend participants stay partially clothed until the beginning of the run. We also recommend people bring a coverup with them for when they finish the run or if they need to drop out of the run early. For more information about this see the "clothing" section on the Bare to Breakers website.

Note: Your bib (running number) if bare buns can be attached to a cap, headband or from a necklace or belt. If you are modest, the bib can be a loincloth of sorts. (Instant "minimal.") There most likely will be citizens/runners participating that will object to nudity, an objection to nude bandits (unregistered/not wearing a bib) will have a lot more clout. Course marshalls can legally ask the SPD to eject you.

[edit] Discussion Group

[edit] Our "agenda"

"Everybody should run through the streets [naked] at least once. If you can do that, chances are you can have a lot of fun in other areas of your life."
Madonna, singer

People will be interested in participating for different reasons. Perhaps people are attracted to participating in costume, getting body painted, running/walking in The Torchlight Run at Seafair, breathing fresh life and imagination into mainstream Seattle events, supporting artistic/body-positive events or just to take life a little less seriously. There is no litmus test for who should participate. We do expect that people act responsibly to avoid trouble.

[edit] A political event?

We are hoping not to have this event become political, there are enough politically-motivated naked/painted events in Seattle. We just want to have fun and increase the amount of creativity and involvement of the arts community in more mainstream Seattle cultural events such as Seafair. However, if people try to block participants from making their own choices about how to dress or decorate themselves in the run, it will get as political as necessary to ensure people can express themselves in responsible, respectful, artistic and personalized ways.

[edit] Immediate needs

  • Getting the word out and getting people to sign up to participate
  • Find a bodypainting party location (see above)
  • Financial support
  • Community endorsements
  • Photographers when we are on the event course

This was the first year of the event.

[edit] Event Reports

Daniel Johnson was the first and only one to run naked at Seafair in 2006. Similarly, Lesli Josephson is widely credited to be the first to run naked at Bay to Breakers in 1978.

[edit] Daniel's report

"Wow! I had a great time. I bodypainted myself as having shorts on, complete with trim and stripes. When I passed people, it took about a second or so for them to see that the shorts I had on were actually nothing but paint. People had a good laugh! I barely made it through the 5K run because I had very little water or food ahead of time so I was incredibly thirsty and my blood sugar level was way down. I was joined in support with photographer Mike Adams and J. Steve, who watching me from a building at the half way point and biked along side on the sidewalk. He then joined me for all of the fine smoothies, drinks and food available to participants at the end."

"I did ask the police if they heard anything about a naked painted guy running through the event and they did not. I told them I was curious because I was the guy who did it and I wanted to hear if there were any complaints or concerns. They seemed surprised. They were not interested in taking down my information because no complaint was made. There were tons of police downtown for this event and the Torchlight Parade, possibly several hundred." -Daniel Johnson

[edit] J. Steve's report

"I began my observation from Victor Steinbrueck Park, just northwest of Pike Place Market I was about 20 feet above the northbound 8km runners on the viaduct. Perhaps one percent of runners had any costume or decoration. The next volley of runners were on the 5km route, and make a U-Turn above Pike Street. I relocated to a vantage point that was eye level with the runners and just 50 feet away. A great photo location for this race."

"I didn't notice Daniel, until he waved at me... there were so many runners his naked/painted form didn't stand out at all. No one was making any special notice of it at all."

"I only saw smiles on the faces of runners who noticed, as this route has few spectators. The two men running in grass skirts and tribal paint noticed, smiled, and pointed."

"Once past the U-Turn, I left my eye-to-eye vantage point, and rode to where the viaduct on-ramp would return the runners to street level. Again, Daniel spotted me before I spotted him, and I cycled along side observing the dozen or so runners nearest Daniel. A smile or two was spotted, but clearly the focus of the runners was running."

"At the corner turning east, I stopped and observed the run marshal and SPD officer as Daniel ran by. Again, just a smile, if they noticed at all."

"Yes, it is true that Daniel had the best "paint job" for the run: painted on shorts."

"Next year, with a little planning and networking to find runners, I'm sure a larger group could complete the 5km "buns to the wind" with a few more cheers."

"The real challenge will be to enter the 8km race, which ends with traversing the TorchLight Parade route right down 4th Avenue. That's where the city and tourists are gathered to watch the parade which begins at 7:30pm."

J. Steve Mayo, reporting live from Seattle's Torchlight Run.
