This is the wikia page for the Seattle contingent of the Naked Pumpkin Run, an event where like-minded people party, carve and decorate pumpkins and streak en masse with their pumpkin creations on their heads. NPR is a non-political, participatory arts event.

Go as bare as you dare! The event is clothing-optional, nudity is not mandatory. However, most people prefer to go nude or topfree, especially when considering the anonymity of wearing a pumpkin-head mask.

Komo News is reporting that the 6th Annual Seattle Naked Pumpkin Run will happen Saturday Oct 29th, 2011 in Fremont at 11:11. BRRR chilly today.

The 5th Annual Seattle Naked Pumpkin Run (NPR) is scheduled for Sunday, Oct 31, 2010 Halloween - Rain or shine! The Day Run in Fremont (4th Annual since 2007) will be followed by our traditional Night Run at Green Lake (since 2006).

The Pumpkin Carving Party will take place from 10:00 - 11:45 AM on 10/31/2010 and will be located at the Fremont Arts Council Powerhouse, located at 3940 Fremont Ave N (map). See what to bring below.

IMPORTANT: The specific times and locations that these events take place will be revealed to those who attend our pumpkin carving party, as wells as our friends, family and like-minded groups. The Fremont Day Run follows the party at Noon.

We want to keep only those with good intentions informed about actual where's and who's of our shindig. Word-of-mouth and friends of people should be encouraged to participate too. We will meet up before the start time at a secret Seattle location disclosed to NPR Seattle participants and those who attend the Pumpkin Carving Party.

Naked Pumpkin Run is a PARTICIPATORY event, NOT a spectator sport, except, well... for when we are on the LOOSE IN THE STREETS!... Muhahahahahaha!

You are either running with a pumpkin on your head or directly helping out our team, or a random person we run past on the street!

Optional extra activities: We may also have some cardboard tube fighting for those interested. This would take place in compliance, more or less, to the Cardboard Tube Fighting League rules. All cardboard tube weapons will be inspected for compliance and only those interested in participating, with tubes, will be allowed to participate. To ensure nobody's pumpkin gets accidentally gets knocked off and destroyed this will be done after the run only, if it takes place at all.

Want to help us throw our pumpkin party? We could use food, decorations, healthy beverages and carving tools! Please put a call out to all your crazy friends! Once at the party many of the fence sitters will be swept away by the contagious nature of the event and may join you on the streets! Please bring your friends to help carve and run with!

For those concerned about the chilly weather conditions, Josh has this to say: "you get used to it, like a hot tub, ...but not hot." If you are concerned about being too chilled you can take a quick jog in warm clothes for 5-10 minutes, that should help quite a bit.

Before the eventEdit

  • A pumpkin. Get them early, stores do run out, you want to get one that is big enough.
    • One of our artists, Franz, has offered to make papier-mâché pumpkin heads for $17-25 per pumpkin (sliding scale). You can also buy some of these from Daniel in advance.
  • Accessories: Daniel had the idea to put light sticks or electroluminescent wire (EL wire) in the pumpkin for a lit pumpkin look.

For the carving partyEdit

  • Party supplies
  • Drinks and food (something light and healthy please)
  • Carving tools (the safer ones that we recommended are specifically made for carving pumpkins and are very inexpensive and widely available in stores before halloween), bowls, newspaper, et cetera
  • An idea for the pumpkin head design
  • Costume + accessories
  • Simple body art if you wish (however, it is hard to get painted, travel to the start location with clothes, and still retain a nice paint job when the clothes come off)

For the runEdit

  • A carved out pumpkin, large enough to fit over your head, with big openings that you can see out of while running/jogging a short distance. Buy your pumpkins early – the big ones may start disappearing!
    • Franz has made four papier-mâché pumpkin heads for $17-25 per pumpkin (sliding scale). Rent one for the evening for $5 - cheap! Please e-mail me ASAP if you are interested (see selections at right). These are lightweight and reusable.
    • For those wearing real pumpkins, Cleo recommends wearing shower caps so your “hair doesn't get icky”.
  • Somewhere to stash your clothes or something to put your clothes in. While its a bit risky, many people just left their clothes where we met up, which makes it much easier to run.
    • One popular idea is to use a trick or treat bag for your clothes to run with.
    • accessories: glowsticks (not recommended because they are toxic), el-wire-ware, et cetera. The area we will be starting at for our night run is very dark, you may want to bring a bright flashlight to see your way. Of course you can just follow the aimless ass of the clown in front of you.
  • Shoes/socks you can jog in
  • Bring a towel if you are crazy enough to take this experience one step further into the lake afterwards on the Night Run. 2007 was the first year a few started taking the plunge. As if running naked with a cold slimy pumpkin on your head wasn't bad enough. Brrrrr!!
  • Bring your friends! Maybe the one who isn’t quite convinced of the merits of all of this malarkey can guard your clothes.

DisclaimerEdit

WARNING: Run at your own risk! The Night Run area is dark, the air is cold, surrounded by water and there are some trip hazards in the park (which are even harder to see with a pumpkin over your head. There always seems to be at least one accident or injury during our event. BE WARNED!

Run time & distanceEdit

Traditionally NPR events start somewhere between 9 and 10 PM. The Boulder NPR group also recommends this time as the college bar people are still at bay and the kids are mostly off the streets.

The distance of this run is up in the air. How long will the run be? We’ll discuss it before we run, but last year we just winged it. We actually ran/jogged/stumbled a good distance, 15-25 minutes or so, believe it or not, since the entire Green Lake area seemed completely desolate. There is no planned route – the nature of the run will be at times random, confused, ridiculous and often highly exuberant!

Boulder generally runs for only 4-5 blocks, hardly a blink of the eye, but lets try to decide as a group what we are comfortable with. Obviously, its cold and many of us work the next day and want to avoid legal entanglements (not to mention the challenge of trying to look through and run with a pumpkin on the head).

On a chilly Tuesday night on Halloween of 2006 Seattle launched its inaugural Seattle event at Green Lake Park. We had a great time and had a very strong event, setting a new record for an innagural run with seven participants (previous record was three people set by Denver in 2005, according to Naked Pumpkin Run Central in Boulder, Colorado). We decided to meet at 9:28 PM (or 8:88 as Josh would say) at a the secret North Seattle location disclosed to NPR Seattle participants.

This location was at the Green Lake Park East Beach, at the lifeguard elevated chair, inside of the 2.8 mile inner walk/bike trail, and adjacent to/just west of the Community Center/Evans Pool (7201 E. Green Lake Drive N). We took a few pictures clothed and naked as a group (thanks to Peterman and his friend) and then we went off!

We ran somewhere between 15-25 minutes around on the inner path and later started running along the street, before returning to the start area, posing in front of the pool/community center, and posing on the lifeguard chair. It was quite dark in the park, and there were few people on the path, and surprisingly few out driving on the streets. People were honking, pulling over and screaming, giving us cheers, people in the community center were taking our picture with their mobile phone cameras, it was awesome!

Our second year we had events on Friday, Oct 31, 2007 Halloween followed by our 2nd Annual Seattle NPR Daylight Run on Saturday, Nov 1st in Fremont. This was the first ever day ride for Naked Pumpkin Run anywhere!

In 2008 we had our 2nd daylight run + 3rd Night Run on Halloween. We also held our first pumpkin carving party, at Scott B's house. Twelve were arrested in Boulder, CO in 2008.

In 2009 we had our 3rd daylight run + 4th Night Run on Halloween. We also had another third night run in the U-District. Beginning in 2009 we began holding our Pumpkin Carving Parties at the Fremont Arts Council Powerhouse. In 2009, the Boulder Police Chief threatened to arrest pumpkin runners as sex offenders (Source: Wall Street Journal).

Seattle's incarnation of the Naked Pumpkin Run celebrated its 10th event on Halloween 2010, growing in participants only slightly, while Boulder, the home base of the pumpkin run since 1999, seems to have gone into hibernation after police have threatened naked runners with arrest for a second year. In 2010, the Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett went on record saying that pumpkin runners should not be considered sex offenders. (source )

Daniel Johnson, an organizer of Seattle's Naked Pumpkin run had this to say about developments in Boulder:

"The crackdown on the Naked Pumpkin Run in Boulder could happen in any City that allows law enforcement to determine what passes as cultural expression and recreation. Boulder Police have shown arrogance in its heavy-handed approach to this valued American cultural tradition and have become complacent to very people have who have entrusted them to show discernment. Seattle Police have recently shown the very same lack of good judgment in its handling of our local World Naked Bike RIde events. I call it Government Gone Wild."

Seattle celebrated its 10th Naked Pumpkin Run since 2006 with a day run in Fremont (Fourth Annual) and a night run in Green Lake (5th Annual). There were nine participants at the Fremont run, a new record for Seattle and eight at the night run at Green Lake.

The Fremont Day Run included a carving party at the Fremont Art Council Powerhouse on Fremont Avenue, followed by a short run including stops at the Lenin Statue, Center of the Universe, the Interurban statue and a run through the Fremont Sunday Market, a first for the group. Some members of the group also enjoyed informal cardboard tube fighting along the route. One runner came all the way from Maryland after hearing that Seattle had a Naked Pumpkin Run that was active.

The Green Lake Night Run took its traditional run around areas of Green Lake Park and the local business district including running past Tacos Guaymas on the SE and then Green Lake Bar & Grill, The Little Red Hen and Starbucks, among others in the vicinity of East Green Lake Way North and NE 71st and 72nd Streets. Runners also reveled in playful fun on the playground near the Green Lake Community Center.

Lots of Halloween events are going on around town, but the best (we should know, we saw the pic before it was photoshopped … ) has got to be the Naked Pumpkin Run, a Seattle Halloween tradition since 2006. If you missed this afternoon’s run in Fremont, never fear, naked pumpkin runners are coming here!
Runners are meeting tonight around 8 p.m. (email Daniel by 7 p.m. to confirm the exact time) on the east side of Green Lake, at the elevated lifeguard chair just west of the Community Center/Evans Pool.
What’s the point, you ask? Daniel says there’s no agenda – it’s just a fun seasonal event.
