UPDATE: I spoke briefly on the phone with two of the organizers of this Saturday's Ride, Emily Miller and Todd Tollefson. "The three main things that I think of WNBR representing are the promotion of body acceptance, alternative transportation without the use of oil, and increased awareness of bikes" said Emily. On the theme of bike awareness, Emily says that she'd "like to see the City get involved more officially in how we (pedestrians, bicyclists, cars) interact with each other".
Todd mentioned one of WNBR Seattle's taglines: "Because the Solstice Parade isn't the only time you can ride naked in Seattle".

I have nothing against bikes, bikers, bike clubs or bike trails. But it's not the bikes or everyday cyclists that concern me: It's the in-your-face radical activists and their two-wheel orgies -- characteristically rude and, on occasion, in the nude -- such as coalition rally-rides blocking traffic on downtown streets. Am I alone appalled by such belligerent, anti-social stunts?
Also, take a look at my first-person account of the Critical Mass ride Friday:
A young professional from Bellevue who drives his car to work. A couple visiting from Tucson, Ariz., and their 2-year-old son. A middle-age woman riding with her Wiener dog in a basket, and a naked guy.
They're not exactly people you'd think would go on a bike ride that turned violent. But they were pedaling through downtown Seattle as part of critical mass Friday night when the monthly cyclist-awareness event turned into a knock-down-drag-out affair.
...And let me tell you, by the time you get to the top of that steep hill, going commando doesn't seem like such a strange idea anymore.
One man rode around wearing a pair of shorts but no shirt. And as soon as riders headed off en masse he stripped off the shorts and rode naked, despite the cool weather.
Yeah, Critical Mass is back, there's a naked rider, baby!" one woman yelled.

  • Sept 8, 2006 The Doris Monson Show on KIRO Newsradio, Doris discusses MBB on first hour of show [15] (show archived on SFBC site) and into the second hour [16] as well. Dori reads e-mail exchanges with Johnson and Dori's producer regarding Storey and Johnson appearing on the show, and argues that MBB should purchase their own land for clothing-optional use, avoiding the use of tax payers' money for that purpose. Phone calls were taken from people who were supportive or against the group's mission. Dori argued that it is not normal to be naked in a park, it is "aberrant behavior", therefore skinny-dippers in Seattle are "freaks". He also claimed that "in general this is a homely bunch of people". Dori examines images of people on the SeattleBeaches.org Web site to judge how attractive people are who are involved in the group. Dori also examined other aspects of the Web site, including polls cited and a quote by Gandhi.

  • KUOW-FM in Seattle did an interview for their program called Weekday with the cyclists at the Ballard neighborhood where the bodypainting party was taking place, taking up at least three residential lots. The interview was reportedly about cycling safety in Seattle. This is confirmed by several cyclists and pictures taken at the bodypainting party. The segment aired on Thursday, June 22, 2006.
