Streaking is defined as an activity where one person, or a group of people, run naked through a public place where people don't usually go around naked.

This activity is not strictly confined to its definition. For example, it is still classed as a form of streaking if a streaker merely jogs, walks or even stands still. To this extent, any place where a streaker can be seen by others is regarded as a public place, so essentially, a streak through a forest is just as good as a streak through a shopping mall. But one can't of course go streaking through a nude beach.

Streaking is often considered a form of exhibitionism although many would dispute any sexual reason for the activity. Regardless, it is done to create a shock value and therefore needs witnesses who would not be expecting the nudity to be present.

There are several annual events where people are publicly allowed to run naked through public areas including Bay to Breakers in San Francisco that many would call streaking but given that since the event is allowed by the authorities and therefore there is no chance of arrest and given that the nudity isn't unexpected by most onlookers it is questionable whether participation in such an activity should be considered streaking although it does have the effect of focusing the attention upon the naked person among clothed spectators so in some way fulfills the desire to be noticed which is part of the reason most streakers engage in their behavior.

Another activity that would possibly fall under the definition of streaking since there is no other term for it is to go naked in places and at times where the possibility of witnesses aren't guaranteed as it is for say streaking at a sporting event. Such activities would include walking around a neighborhood naked late at night or in an area where there are few people but still the possibility of a occasional witness. The attraction of this activity is in the risk taking suspense of the possibility of getting caught and the thrill of "getting away with something" if no one witnesses the nudity.

This may fall into what one website calls Secret Naturism which the author of the web page defines as the act of nudity in everyday locations, while remaining invisible to the public at all times. Although in that case the goal is not to be caught whereas in the aforementioned situation the goal may be just to decrease the likelihood of being caught by choice of time and location but that is just in order to increase the suspense and uncertainty of the situation and not necessarily a desire to totally eliminate any chance of detection as the definition of secret naturism suggests. It would seem that where in the one case one might not attempt to hide upon seeing other people, it seems like with Secret Naturism one would.
