[edit] 2005 Reports

WNGD fans:

My wife Kathy, friend Daniel, and I found an out-of-the-way King County Park just south of Seattle, Washington where we could do some naked weeding. The weather started off as being a bit drippy, but it got better and turned to sunshine later that afternoon. We snapped some pictures, and we'll post a couple on the WNGD Web site soon. Afterwards we went back to our house and did some cleaning up au naturel in our vegetable bed. This was a fun day, and we hope others thought so, too.

Let's hear about what others did!

After some nude gardening on Saturday, went to a birthday concert of a friend's compositions, and heard his setting of a short poem by Michael Aitken:

SEASONAL INTERCHANGE

In Winter, when the trees are bare,
We mortals don our winter wear.
In Spring, when trees begin to dress,
We mortals then start wearing less,
Until, for some, with Summer's heat
The role reversal is complete.

How apt! And the composer is a naturist, which is probably why he noticed the poem and set it).

Bernard.

Thanks Mark- This has been a great idea....but a little slow in coming! I've been gardening naked for 40 years now, we are fortunate to live in a wooded spot and we own the forested lots behind the house which makes this all possible. To top off a day of nude gardening, my wife and I enjoy a hot/cold outside shower and then just dry off in the sun. Difficult to imagine how it could get much better! Anyway, thanks for your efforts. Saturday here in Southern California was rather cool and overcast, giving us some relief from extremely warm weather earlier in the week. But it was certainly comfortable enough to be naked outdoors, so with my machete, pruners and handsaw in hand I ventured to the edge of my avocado grove to rid a ruby red grapefruit tree and a lime tree of an overgrowth of red apple ice plant. Having had quadruple bypass surgery last October 25, it was not possible for me to get control of the weed situation during the spring, so many things got overgrown. I was able to spend 2 1/2 glorious hours working naked in the yard and thoroughly enjoyed my time. Working naked outside is not new to me, as I have been an avid nudist for many years, but this was the first real occasion since my surgery to be able to spend that much time outside naked. There is nothing finer than working without the encumbrance of clothing. Sounds like many others enjoyed their day also. Unfortunately, I was alone, but that also is not uncommon.

Lets continue to stay naked as we garden.

Dwight

Peace be with you Luther! Nice pictures, I had to get dressed half way through the day but I managed some nude gardening and a nude walk in fields near home!

Happy nude living!

I have a lot of nude gardening experience because I live in a small apartment and have only two window plants that I water once a week in the nude. However I thought for WNGD I should do a bit more than just that so I looked asked around to see who would be willing to help me do a bit more for this occasion. One of my friends volunteered, so on Saturday September 10th I went to their house near Worcester, MA. where two other friends joined us and, after lunching in our gardening attire, we did some nude gardening in their backyard. We picked vegetables and took a lot of pictures. We really did not have a photographer so we used two cameras and took turns photographing each other working in the garden. The area was pretty remote but a privacy screen was erected so that the neighbors would not bother us. The photos and a story will be submitted to N Magazine. After all the hard work we relaxed in their new hot tub.

I am looking forward to doing this again next year.

World Naked Gardening Day

To celebrate WNGD, I decided to spend the whole day naked.

Starting at 6:30 am on September 10, a fiend came over and joined me in the garden. I was naked, but she decided to stay clothed. I made some mint tea from the garden on a little cook stove and for about an hour we chatted and sipped tea, until she had to go.

I spent the rest of the day lounging or working in the garden, soaking up the warming texas sunshine.

At sunset I drank a few cold beers, then rolled out a sleeping bag in the garden. I laid on top of the bag on my back, star gazing until I became bleary eyed with sleep. A few mosquitos buzzed around me, but only one was brave enough to nip at my garlic and jalapeno laced blood.

I awoke just at daybreak and gathering my tea supplies, made a cup of hot mint tea and sat in the blissful solitude of my garden.

I would describe the last naked 24 hours as my perfect day.

The link below will take you to my yahoo public photos. Pictures I snapped throughout my naked gardening day.

Peace through nakedness, Luther

Hi folks.

Pleased to report a wonderful couple of hours nude gardening this afternoon on World Naked Gardening Day.

Weather here in S-E England was warm (25C - 77F), bright but with the threat of thundery showers.

Took the opportunity to thin out a very large bushy Forsythia (actually part of the privacy screen in the garden). Also clipped the edges of the lawn around some of the shrubs and borders with hand-shears - not easy to do with the power mower.

In the middle of this, "Mr P." - our neighbourhood cock pheasant - turned up looking for food. These bird may have the reputation for stupidity, but he's the only one of dozens of wild birds that regularly feed in our garden that will come right up and eat seed from my hand!

Looking forward to seeing other reports of naked gardening activity today.

Stay bare!

John

World Naked Gardening Day

Get ready for the inaugural World Naked Gardening Day! People across the globe are encouraged, on September 10, 2005, to tend their portion of the world’s garden clothed as nature intended.

Gardening has a timeless quality, and anyone can do it: young and old, singles or groups, the fit and infirm, urban and rural. An elderly lady in a Manhattan apartment can plant new annuals in her window box. Families can rake leaves in their back yard. Freehikers can pull invasive weeds along their favorite stretch of trail. More daring groups can make clothes-free sorties into public parks to do rapid five-minute cleanups.

All that’s involved is getting naked and making the world’s gardens—whatever their size, public or private—healthier and more attractive. The World Naked Gardening Day has no political agenda, nor is it owned or organized by any one particular group. Naked individuals and group are encouraged to adopt the day for themselves.

Events like World Naked Gardening Day can help develop a sense of community among naked folk of every stripe. Taking part in something that is bigger than any one household, naturist group, or gardening club can move gardeners with an au naturel joie de vivre toward becoming a community. And in the case of World Naked Gardening Day, it’s fun, costs no money, runs no unwanted risk, reminds us of our tie to the natural world, and does something good—without any political baggage—for the environment.

So what should you do? First of all, on September 10, 2005, find an opportunity to get naked and do some gardening. Do so alone, with friends, with family, with your club, or with an organized group collected for that purpose. Do it inside your house, in your back yard, on a hiking trail, at a city park, or on the streets. Stay private or go public. Make it a quiet time or make it a public splash. Just get naked and make your part of the botanical world a healthier and prettier place.

Secondly, tell someone about your experience. No one owns this event, so it does not really matter whom you tell, but tell someone. Tell your friends about your naked gardening experience; write down what you thought of it and email it to your local newspaper; submit stories and photos to your club newsletter.

World Naked Gardening Day will be the second Saturday of each September. See www.WNGD.org for updates, reports, and more information.
